The Mill Creek SSA Advisory Board has narrowed its focus to five priorities:
Land ownership — returning common areas and monument sites to SSA control
Ponds — clarifying maintenance responsibility across the community’s water features
Landscaping — defining responsibility and service expectations with our contractor
Communication and quality control — closing the loop on resident requests and ensuring quality standards are maintained
Roads, sidewalks, paths, and streetlights — assessing and addressing condition issues
Progress on land.
The SSA Board is rapidly advancing efforts to gain control of the common lands in Mill Creek to advance the goal of controlling our community’s standards. Discussions are underway to transfer several parcels within Mill Creek to public ownership through Kane County Facilities Management. Additional parcels currently held in trust are also under discussion. These are early-stage conversations and no transfer is final; the Board will report progress as it develops. The SSA generally cannot direct maintenance or improvements on property it does not own. Resolving ownership unlocks the rest.

Ponds.
The Shodeen Group has communicated that pond maintenance is forthcoming. Conversations will continue in the interim and throughout to ensure standards are maintained. Because the Water Reclamation District views the ponds as utilitarian, they will remain part of the ongoing solution.

The board has agreed that communication would be a key pillar of its ongoing success. Some residents received correspondence from the Forest Preserve District that did not reflect the district’s position. The district confirmed it will take no further action, and the communications went out in error.

What the SSA Maintains
Three core responsibilities.

1. Parkway Tree Maintenance
The SSA inspects, prunes, and removes dead or diseased trees in the public parkway strip — the area between sidewalk and street. Replacement plantings follow Kane County’s parkway tree program.
2. Public Sidewalks
Sidewalk panels within the public parkway are SSA-maintained. Private walks, driveways, and patios remain the homeowner’s responsibility.
3. Street & Entrance Lighting
Report dark or flickering streetlights and neighborhood entrance lights. We coordinate repair with ComEd and our lighting contractor.

Kane County requires building permits for many types of construction including additions, finishing spaces in basements and attics, porches, decks, gazebos, pools, residing, and reroofing. It is your responsibility to check with Kane County if a permit is required for your project, and if it is, apply for and obtain the required permits before starting your project. As review and approvals may take several weeks, it is recommended that you obtain any required permits before ordering materials or scheduling work. If you have questions, please call 630-232-3485.
